Swimming Pool Winterizing

Unfortunately the swim season has to come to a close each year. Looking to get your pool ready for the up coming off-season? We have your how-to, or we can come out and do it for you! What is in involved in getting a pool winterized?

  • A couple days before closing up your pool the water chemicals will need to be adjusted. Make sure the pH level is between 7.2 to 7.4 ppm, the alkalinity in the 80 to 120 ppm range, and calcium hardness in the 180 to 220 ppm range. When your levels are in acceptable range, shock the water following the directions on the packaging. Let the chlorine get back to 1.0 to 3.0 ppm, then add in your algaecide. High chlorine will break down algaecides and could harm your pool cover.
  • Remove skimmers, all automatic cleaners, ladders, wall fittings, and hoses. (Reminder: Don’t wrap up hoses to tightly, and make sure your automatic cleaner is completely drained as well as all hoses.)
  • Clean the pool thoroughly with a brush, skimmer, and vacuum. Any left over dirt, leaves, or foreign objects will cause degrading on your pool walls or steps.
  • Lower the water level. This can mean different things for different pool covers. The water should be about a foot below the skimmer intakes for mesh covers, half a foot for solid covers, but for skimmer covers you may not need to low the water at all.
  • Make sure all equipment is drained. If any water is present in your lines, hoses or equipment it will freeze and likely cause cracking or become broken. It might be a good idea to store most equipment indoors where the elements can’t get to them.
  • Blow all lines and plumbing clear of water and plug all lines to prevent water from gathering. If not blowing out all lines you may use swimming pool anti-freeze, just follow all instructions on the packaging.
  • Pour in algaecide following all instructions on the products packaging. Then you will be able to add in your chlorine floater, but make sure the floater won’t tip over. If you have a vinyl lining in the pool you should not use a chlorine pool floater as it will cause bleaching of the liner. Non-chlorine winter floaters can be used.
  • Now is the time to place the cover. Make sure that your cover is a tight fit. Any loose fitting covers gather debris and will easily develop holes where contaminates can enter.
