Green Pool Water, Algae Infestation

Do you have a green pool? Yellow algae infestation? Worst yet Black algae? Algae can get into the pool in many ways. But once inside it multiplies very quickly. Luckily it isn’t harmful to humans, but it can be very unsightly and makes the water cloudy. Algae can be food for some types of bacteria that are very bad, and not good for swimmers, so it’s never a good idea to let it stick around for very long. Over look an infestation a little to long and you will end up with a problem that takes up a lot of time and money to get rid of.
If you are having some clouding or maybe gunk gathering in hard to reach nooks and crannies, you might have an algae problem waiting to happen. What to do once you know you have problem?
  • Manual vacuuming is the best thing you can do to get rid of an algae problem. Robo and automatic cleaners are just not made for clearing algae. When vacuuming algae away be sure to vacuum to waste and not into your filter as this just recirculates it back into your pool.
  • Brushing along the all surfaces in your pool using a stiff brush. Make sure to get along corner, stairs, and around obstructions very good, as this is where it will build up the most.
  • Balance the chemical levels in the water to optimal ranges so that your sanitizers will work at peak efficiency. Low alkalinity and high pH stops shocking treatments from working as well as they should.
  • Before shocking its always a good idea to place your cleaning equipment in the pool that way you will be sanitizing it at the same time as your water.
  • Depending on what kind of infestation you are looking at will determine the amount of shocking chemicals will be needed. It is recommended to use calcium hypo-chlorite shock. For green algae use double the amount recommended. Yellow or dark green use three times. And for black algae up to four times may be needed.
Don’t use stabilized chlorine for shocking as it creates cyanuric acid which inhibits the affects of the chlorine, and will land you back to where you started or worst off then before.
  • As soon as all the algae is been neutralized you will want to make sure and run your filter continuously for at least eight hours to clear out all the contaminates from the water. You may use a pool water clarifier to help this process along.
  • Lastly clean out your filter. No reason to let those nasty particles back into you pool once we have worked so hard to remove them. This can be done by soaking it in diluted muriatic acid, or to be on the safe side just replace it all together.
